Garner’s commercial base is light industrial, retail along the 70 and 401 corridors, and the growing White Oak area. Militech International serves it from Cary, about twenty-five minutes away.

Working in an active warehouse

Most of the interesting work in Garner is in buildings that are running. Distribution and light industrial space does not close so a contractor can pull cable, which sets the terms for everything.

You work around operations rather than the reverse. That means lift work in aisles that have forklift traffic, scheduling around shift changes and receiving windows, and accepting that the area you planned to work in today may be full of pallets. It also means the site is genuinely more dangerous than an office fit-out, and a contractor who is casual about that is a liability to your operation regardless of how good their terminations are.

Device placement is a real design question in these buildings. Where a camera or a reader goes on a drawing and where it survives are different locations. Anything mounted below about eight feet in a space with material handling equipment eventually gets hit. Conduit protection on the lower runs costs a little now and prevents a recurring repair line forever.

The environment is harder on the cable plant too. Dust, temperature swings in unconditioned space, and vibration all shorten the life of an install that was specified for an office. Cable rated for the environment and pathway that keeps it out of harm’s way is not gold-plating here, it is the difference between a ten-year install and a three-year one.

Fire alarm in high-bay space

High ceilings change fire alarm design in ways that surprise people. Detector spacing and response both degrade with ceiling height, notification coverage in a big reflective box does not follow office math, and the strategy that works in a carpeted suite fails here.
